01 AMSTERDAM 3 | The last of the sun at the Muziekgebouw
This third Amsterdam gallery offers photographs of a variety of architectural facades and details made on walks around the centre. IMAGE: Designed by Danish architects 3XN founded by Kim Herforth Nielson this building was opened in 2005 to focus on contemporary classical music. A performance space for jazz occupies a smaller projecting structure in a contrasting style. This image was made as the warm light from the evening sun was about to disappear.
02 AMSTERDAM 3 | Buildings on De Ruijterkade five minutes later
Minutes later I photographed this pair of buildings set in a long and visually varied streetscape, its colours warmed by the last direct light from the setting sun.
03 AMSTERDAM 3 | After the sunset at the Muziekgebouw
In the few minutes it took to walk to the concert hall the light had drastically changed to create this strongly blue image. The annual Holland Festival dates from 1947 and presents the performing arts, theatre, dance, music, opera, literature and the visual arts.
04 AMSTERDAM 3 | NEMO Science Museum from the Prins Henrikkade waterfront
The building was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and completed in 1997. First impressions suggested a ship's prow looming over the water but inspiration apparently came from the road tunnel over which it‘s built. The slope of the roof echoes that of the road as it drops down to the tunnel portico and visitors walk up to the entrance over what is a vast and partly planted green viewing terrace. The Verdigris-patinated copper cladding has a rich colour variation under changing light and weather.
05 AMSTERDAM 3 | A NEMO perspective from Oosterdockseiland
I looked back across the central pier of the footbridge connecting the Science Museum to the Oosterdockseiland. Redevelopment of the area began c.2000 and on my visit work had begun on the final structure to complete the parade of high rise buildings. The asymmetric form of the new Central Library was prominent. Described as an Urban Campus the area is a mix of residential, business, work, study, entertainment and social activities.
06 AMSTERDAM 3 | A NEMO detail from the Oosterdokseilanbd footbridge
Escorted by a young grandson I spent several energetic hours in the NEMO Science Museum. The interior includes large spaces devoted to all manner of hands-on activities to challenge mental and physical skills and enthuse young and some not so young visitors. It's not a museum of objects in the traditional sense followed by the nearby Maritime Museum.
07 AMSTERDAM 3 | The THIS IS HOLLAND BUILDING by the Eye Film Museum
In this drum form building the THIS IS HOLLAND website says that "you'll forget that you're in Amsterdam and feel as though you are really flying over the Dutch landscape. Breathtakingly beautiful filming will give you a spectacular aerial experience. Thanks to the astonishing special effects projected on a huge domed screen, you'll feel like you're flying over the country's must-sees." Here, I was interested in the building's cladding shapes, pattern and lettering.
08 AMSTERDAM 3 | A detail of the EYE Filmuseum taken from the Lookout
The Eye Film Institute building was designed by Delugan Meissi Associated Architects of Vienna and completed in 2011. A short river crossing by ferry from the Centraal Station offers changing views of this dynamic structure. From the A'ADAM Lookout terrace a downward view past the roof edge frames the ramp and steps leading to the Institute entrance.
09 AMSTERDAM 3 | A structural detail of the Eye Film Institute
The pleats and folds in the structure and the linear drawing created by the edges of the variegated cladding panels appealed.
10 AMSTERDAM 3 | Perspective of the Maritime Museum quadrangle roof
The Scheepvaartmuseum building dates from 1656 as the National Naval Warehouse for the Royal Dutch Navy: it became a museum in 1973. The buildings enclose a square courtyard now covered by a glazed roof fitted during extensive renovations and alterations completed in 2011. The light, reflections and the shadows on the walls and the paving grid would be an interesting theme to explore
11 AMSTERDAM 3 | The English Bookstore portcullis comes down at closing time
Another bookshop missed but simply because it was closing for the day and lowering security shutters. Behind the intruding builder's scaffolding the façade looked interesting.
12 AMSTERDAM 3 | An unusual metal framed building overlooking the Blauwbrug over the Amstel
This metal frame and brick building is wedge shaped in plan. Look through its windows to see that the rear wall angles towards a very narrow left gable confirmed when walking past. The overall design, large glass area and the glazing grid pattern appealed.
13 AMSTERDAM 3 | An art and craft market on the Spui Square with a retail store building beyond
On Sundays from March to December the Spui Square hosts an Art Market offering a great variety of unique pieces in art, craft and design and opportunities to meet some of the makers. On Fridays, booksellers from the City and beyond organise a market to enhance the three full-time bookshops in the Square.
14 AMSTERDAM 3 | The steel framed display windows in the Image 13 building
My interest lay with the building's metal frame. At the time I thought that the motor scooter was a visual nuisance but familiarity with the image has made it acceptable, if only to reduce the impact of the white panel within the shop. Ideally I'd have like to have focused further to the left to incorporate and another column and capital but that would still have clipped a part of the bike.
15 AMSTERDAM 3 | Architectura & Natura Bookshop at 20 Leliegracht
The Architectura and Natura Bookshop specialises in architecture, landscape architecture, natural history and photography; it also sells online. In its 75 year history it said to have become one of the leading architectural bookstores in Europe. On this walk past I didn't have time to stop but promised myself a return visit which disappointingly did not happen. It's a certainty on any future stay in Amsterdam.
16 AMSTERDAM 3 | A Japanese antique shop
I also passed this shop devoted to seemingly all manner of Japanese design offered second hand. No time to stop and look and an intention to return later remained unrealised. The façade attracted as did the clothing on the rail and the subdued lighting of the interior.
17 AMSTERDAM 3 | De Mannen Van Kaas – The Men of Cheese
The elegance of the façade of the Dutch Delicacy at 330 Spuistraat is echoed by its interior. It's a cheese shop and bakery over ground and basement floors with a café space quietly placed deep inside. The range, quality and presentation of its produce is impressive: visit and enjoy.
18 AMSTERDAM 3 | Ground floor façade to 115 Rokin
The brickwork patterns on the façade of this building appealed. The four shadows that I regretted are cast by sculptures projecting from the floor above. I was interested to see the great variety and creativity in the use of brick in buildings across Amsterdam.
